A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR -- january 28, 2012
My dear people and friends of the Newman Fellowship,

“…only the most foolish or naïve Christian will ever be surprised, scandalized, or discouraged by the opposition that necessarily shows up wherever serious Kingdom-building operations are under way” (Fr. John Bartenuk, LC, The Better Part).

On Wednesday I received a letter from Fr. Jeffrey Steenson, Ordinary for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.  He informed me that Archbishop Charles Chaput had declined to give me his votum (his desire, his promise) at this time for me to proceed toward ordination in the Catholic Church.

Beyond the nulla osta (no impediment) that I received from the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith in early November 2011, a votum must be given by the local Catholic bishop for someone who resides in his diocese.  The Archbishop raised some concerns that I will share with you on Sunday.  Rita and I will not be going to Houston this weekend, so I will be present to celebrate Sunday’s Mass.  Deacon Converse will preach.

What this means for you and me is that these concerns of Archbishop Chaput need to be satisfactorily resolved before he will grant his votum.  It means that my path towards ordination has been halted until this occurs; but, after a lengthy conversation with Fr. Steenson on Thursday, I want to assure that this does not impede the Fellowship’s life and trajectory.  Fr. Steenson repeatedly spoke of his pleasure in what he sees happening and unfolding as he regularly visits our website.  He commented on the great love and care he sees we have for one another, and the presence of a vibrant corporate spirit.

Hold fast to this truth:  “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

I look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday.  Blessed John Henry Newman, pray for us.

+David L. Moyer
